Rats & Mice Infestation

As the weather is cooling we find the rodent activity is increasing as the mice and rats are making their way into our homes and offices in search of warmth. People are hearing scratching and scuttling sounds in their ceilings and some are even seeing evidence of droppings. Rodents can cause extensive damage if they eat through wires not to mention from a hygiene perspective they can contaminate food and other materials through their droppings. Rodents reproduce rapidly so it is very important to get rid of them as soon as you hear or see them. We have had customers who thought the odd mouse or baby rat looked cute until they realised how quickly they multiply. If you are worried you have rats or mice give us a call and our friendly team can best advise on how to treat.

Termite Damage – Sunshine Coast

Termites are known as silent destroyers as they attack the timbers in your home without you even knowing. Termites are subterranean you cannot see them as they live and travel underground. Termites can enter your home in various ways through; unprotected plumbing and electrical penetrations, ground level built up over weepholes and termite protected areas, cracks in slabs, unprotected home extensions/slabs to name a few. They will work in the wall voids eating away at the timbers leaving the exterior looking in tact however very soft and brittle to the touch, which is one of the ways people notice them when the timber gives way. In some cases extensive damage has happened by then! If you suspect or notice termite activity or termite damage it is best not to disturb them and call a termite manager to investigate as if you break a termite lead the termites go straight back to ground and pop up elsewhere at a later stage, whereas if they are in the lead and active you have a higher success rate in treating and getting rid of the termites. The termites can either be treated chemically or by baiting. Either treatment is very effective and the termite manager will recommend the treatment he feels best suited for the situation.

Tips to help you prevent termite attack

Termites are a huge threat to homes in Australia and an even higher risk in Queensland with our climate.  Statistics show that 1 in 5 buildings will be attacked by termites.  The Australian Standards recommend a minimum of one termite inspection a year be carried out and at more frequent intervals if deemed necessary by the termite manager.  There are many tips we can offer to help prevent termite attack; and this is done by reducing the conducive conditions in and around your home;

  • ensure any aircon or hot water overflows are plumbed into drains; we often find the overflows draining to the base of the building which creates a possible moisture source for termites
  • ensure that you do not have vegetation built up against the building edges
  • remove any stored items from against the building edge
  • remove any debris and timber from sub-floor areas
  • ensure any leaking taps are repaired
  • ensure any broken or damaged down pipes are repaired
  • ensure that weepholes are all clear and ground level is cleared away to approximately 50-75mm below weepholes

The above are a few housekeeping tips which could help you in not attracting termites to your home.

If you do think you have found termites it is best NOT TO DISTURB them as if you break a lead the termites go back to ground which makes if harder and sometimes impossible to treat.

West Indian drywood termite treatment in Queensland

I posted a blog back in March discussing the fact that the since the 1960’s the State Government has paid for the treatment of timber infested by the West Indian drywood termites and Bio Security Queensland was in the process of reviewing whether it is the Governments responsibility to continue to manage the pest.

The State Government has decided to continue with the existing program of finding and exterminating the West Indian drywood termite. The West Indian drywood termite is considered to be the most destructive drywood termite and has caused considerable damage in Maryborough; it has also been found and caused damage in Bundaberg, Brisbane, Rockhampton and Townsville.

Below is a link to a recent article published in the Bundaberg News Mail;

I think home owners will be very happy knowing that the State Government will continue to organise and pay for all surveillance and treatment for the notorious West Indian drywood termite ~ the tiny pest that is a threat to Queensland!

Termite Inspections – Sunshine Coast

Australian Standards recommend your home be inspected for termites at least every 12 months and sometimes more frequent as deemed necessary by the termite inspector.  Having a termite inspection carried out helps you minimise the chances of having termites in your home as we thoroughly inspect your house including your roof void and your sub-floor, fences, yard, shed and garages and we will give recommendations on how to reduce the conducive conditions in and around your home that may attract termites.  Our inspection and advice is followed by an electronic termite inspection report.  Our inspector carries state of the art technology; a Termatrac T3i and a Thermal Imaging (Infra-red) Camera to use if he needs to.  The Termatrac T3i is a multi-functional device which has a motion detection radar, a moisture sensor and a thermal sensor.

Statistics show that in Australia termites cause more damage to homes than fires do; and most home insurers do not cover termite damage leaving thousands of Australians out of pocket.  Regular inspections are crucial as the last thing you want is structural damage to your home – early detection and prevention is the key!

Lock termites out

We are often asked how do termites get in as many of us don’t even know they are eating our homes until the damage has happened. The most common termites are subterranean which means they are underground.   Termites live in colonies, the colony has a queen, soldiers, workers and reproductive termites; with each termite having their role in maintaining the colony. The worker termites are sent from the nest in search of food, they will commute between the nest and the food source. Termites find our homes offer an ideal combination of moisture, food and warmth. As the termites eat from the inside of timber and very seldom will break through the surface of the timber you won’t notice any evidence of damage.
Australian Standards recommend at least an annual termite inspection of homes and sometimes we will recommend inspections be carried out at more frequent intervals depending if you have a termite management system in place,  the design & construction of you home and also the surrounding environmental conditions. Our termite inspections are carried out in accordance with the Australian Standards AS3660.2. We offer obligation free advice on termite management for your home.
